July 18, 2005 ![]() Donjon Marine Co., Inc. a provider of multi-faceted marine services including marine salvage, heavy lift, dredging and related emergency response services, was contracted by the owners and underwriters to provide emergency salvage response services to the unmanned, 360-foot deck cargo barge G.T. Ironmaster. On May 27, 2005, while undertow from Boston to New Haven, CT, by the 4,000-horsepower tug Navigator, the gravel-laden deck barge rolled over and subsequently lost its non-hazardous load. Upon award of the competitively bid salvage contract, Donjon immediately prepared and submitted a salvage plan to owners, the USCG and a number of involved Federal, State and Local agencies which essentially outlined the salvage process. This plan is required before any salvage effort may commence. Concurrently, Donjon mobilized a 15-man salvage team to the vessel to begin the work. Donjon’s 1,000-ton capacity derrick barge Chesapeake 1000 was the primary lift asset used to right the Ironmaster. "Donjon was very pleased to provide service to the Ironmaster and to return it safely to owners," said John A. Witte, Jr. Vice President of Donjon Marine Co., Inc. and Project Manager for the Ironmaster salvage effort. |
