Hillside, New Jersey, USA June 2, 1997 On May 27th, Donjon Marine's U. S. flagged anchor handling/tug supply vessel, ATLANTIC SALVOR, completed the tow of the fully laden 50,000 dwt bulk ship M/V BOREAS, with a 41½' draft, from Port Canaveral, Florida to Kalamaki, Greece, averaging an incredible 8 knots. Over 5,200 miles were logged as the tug towed the ship on its 2,100'of 2¼" wire across the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, stopping in Bermuda and Gibraltar to take on fuel and water for both the tug and the ship. The M/V BOREAS, bound for Greece, suffered a main engine failure off the U. S. East Coast in mid-April. At the time of the request from numerous international brokers to provide quotes for the tow, the ATLANTIC SALVOR was towing north along the U. S. East Coast to Newark, New Jersey with an open hopper barge. Wijsmuller Salvage B.V. contracted with Donjon Marine to have the ATLANTIC SALVOR proceed directly to the ship to commence the tow. In just 96 hours after the contract had been signed with Wijsmuller the tug was alongside the ship transferring fuel and water and making preparations for the tow. What makes this tow even a greater success is that the ATLANTIC SALVOR had completed another "deadship" tow of a 650'loa tank ship, owned by Pemex Petroleos Mexicanos, from the west coast of Mexico to the east coast of Mexico for McDermott Shipbuilding Inc. just three weeks prior to the M/V BOREAS. On February 28th, the ATLANTIC SALVOR departed Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico with the 45,000 grt T/V TOLTECA, bound for a shipyard in Veracruz, Mexico via the Panama Canal. This voyage represented the first time the tug had ever transitted the canal while under the ownership of Donjon Marine. Less than a month later the master of the ATLANTIC SALVOR reported to the home office that the tug and tow had safely arrived at the Veracruz sea buoy. "These past four months represent our continued commitment to provide blue water towing services to the international maritime community," explained Steven G. Newes, a Vice-President of Donjon Marine. "We are proud of our personnel, equipment and ability to complete long-haul international tows to the satisfaction of our customers." Donjon Marine provides services including salvage, heavy-lift, dredging, ocean/coastal/inland towing marine construction, and oil hazardous material spill response. |
