Hillside, New Jersey, USA August 2, 1999 On July 16th Donjon Marine and the Turkish Navy entered into an agreement to tow four ex-U.S. Navy frigates from the East Coast of the United States to Golcuk, Turkey. The first frigate, the ex-USNS Miller (414' length x 44' breadth x 24' depth), began its voyage under tow by Donjon Marine's 7,200 horsepower salvage tug POWHATAN on July 19th. It is expected to arrive in Golcuk on August 14th where the POWHATAN will turn around and proceed back to the U.S. to pick up the second frigate in Charleston. The remaining two frigates are presently at the Philadelphia Naval Yard. The towing tug, POWHATAN, is on a commercial lease from the U. S. Navy to Donjon Marine for the next five years. As the largest and most powerful dedicated salvage tug privately operated under U. S. flag, the POWHATAN has already been utilized by Donjon Marine in other deadship tow operations on the U. S. East Coast and the towage of the company's crane barge CHESAPEAKE 1000 (the largest crane barge on the U. S. East Coast) to Norfolk in order to perform emergency salvage operation. Donjon Marine is currently involved in performing several other salvage projects which include the raising of the F/V CAPE FEAR in 75 feet of water south of Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts with their tugs MARY ALICE and PAUL ANDREW and their crane barge CHESAPEAKE 1000. On the U. S. West Coast, Donjon Marine's salvage tug ATLANTIC SALVOR and crane barge COLUMBIA NEW YORK are engaged in the wreck removal of the M/V NEW CARISSA outside of Coos Bay, Oregeon. |
